Immigration's Newest I-9 Form
This is just a quick post to remind or inform you that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) has created a new I-9 form to be used by all employers. If you haven't already done so, download the new form and begin using it immediately. If you are already a subscriber of mine and have forgotten how to access all my free forms, just send an email to form-i9@prosender.com to automatically be added to that list and get full access.
INS passed the parameters for this new form back in June, but the form itself only became available recently. As you know, the I-9 Form allows certain documents to be used to prove a new employee's eligibility to work in this country. INS reviewed that list of documents and deleted several they felt insufficiently proved the person's identity. Then they added a few documents. I'm guessing that Homeland Security may have had a say in this now that the U.S. has had time to see which documentation has turned out to be less reliable.
The form itself is completed in the same way it always was. Only the list of documents has changed. You can tell you are using the correct form by the revision date of 6/5/2007 in the lower right corner.
One thing most employers forget about is the recertification. If you have an employee who provided you with a document that had to be unexpired to be valid, you have the responsibility of obtaining new documentation (upon that document's expiration) and recording it in the bottom section of the form. If the document the employee originally used is no longer on the list, ask the employee for new documentation that is still on the list.
